Name
11A-Ruling on Objections, #1 for Newer/Non-Attorney Adjudicators: Objections to Testimony
Description
This interactive session, created with newer or non-attorney adjudicators in mind, will help any adjudicator build confidence and competence in ruling on objections raised to or during testimony. Rather than reviewing Federal Rule of Evidence 611, this session looks at objections from a common-sense perspective that acts as a guide for developing a record of the hearing that is fair and complete. The session includes tips on handling objections from unrepresented litigants, moderating the testimony of disruptive witnesses and controlling difficult attorneys. Evaluating kids or elderly witnesses for competence and capacity will be addressed, as will credibility impeachment during cross-examination. The class uses hearing scenarios to illustrate real-world hearing room challenges.
